Merry Christmas 2010, to all

PAPA'S PITTANCE:  This is Christmas Eve 2010 and I'm writing to wish all who read our blog a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year of 2011.

It is a cold, dreary day here in Joplin, Mo and they are predicting, perhaps, freezing rain before the day is done. We have a Christmas Eve service tonight at church and I hope it stays "decent" so we can hve it this year. Last year it was canceled due to a tremendously bad ice storm. Christmas Eve services are one of my favorite memories of Christmas and one of my favorite church services. I remember going to them at the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson with the two huge Christmas trees adorned only with the tinsel, or icicles, as we called them and spotlights on the trees. And the choir usually sang, and one man , a local music teacher, sang "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", born in a manger. It was beautiful and a very good time. Then there was the carol sing that the church had sometime prior to the Christmas Eve service, where the congregation along with the choir(s) sang Christmas carols for an hour and then we had fellowship with Wassail that always smelled so good, with the cider cooking while we were singing.

Then there were some Christmas Eve services that we had at Harmony Heights that were good ones. But, I guess the memories last longer when a person is younger. Some of you will remember the Walks Through Bethlehem in Florida, (grandma and I won't forget that either), and now in Leavenworth. Others will have memories of other such happenings. But, I love Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I get dismayed, sometimes, about what Christmas has come to not mean to most people. Too much emphasis placed on worldly things.

You all have a good Christmas season. Wish we could all be together, but guess time and age won't permit it this year. Perhaps, next------.

God Bless all and hope to see some of you soon.

Love, Papa G (and Grandma, too).
